Why pictures aren't showing on my blog???

I think blogger uses your picasa web account to store images. Mine is full unless I pay some $  so it seems to just be white displaying squares.  Sorry for the lack of visuals.

Testing an embedded photo from Flickr - Sacs Consulting Emerging Leader Award

I have previously posted a test post of one of my own youtube videos http://web2-0adventure.blogspot.com/2010/07/introductory-video-about-web-20.html and one about playing with Widgets / Gadgets http://web2-0adventure.blogspot.com/2010/07/playing-with-importing-rss-feed.html . One of the other activities suggested in week 1 is to "Experiment with adding photos (your own or from Flickr etc), video (your own, or YouTube etc.) and widgets of various kinds."

Playing with Importing RSS Feed Gadget

I've just been playing with my design of my blog.  I've added a RSS feed import gadget using the RSS feeds from the bundles I created http://web2-0adventure.blogspot.com/2010/07/bundles-saving-time-adding-in-rss-feeds.html to create links on my blog to the latest posts on "other adventurers blogs".

I think the presentation of this could be improved as my bundles include my posts as well which is a little bit of duplicate content.  Does this matter?

1b. Web 1.0 - Let's start here

Starting to get a little tired, might just finish for the day with this page.

Questions that entered my head as I am reading this page http://www.digital-web.com/articles/web_2_for_designers/ are:

• Who are Richard MacManus & Joshua Porter, never heard of them before.  I wonder what else I could find out about them?  Once I click on the first link, it becomes clear that they are authors.  My mind (ie thoughts I have/questions I think of) seems to be going faster than I can click.
• "Writing Semantic Markup: Transition to XML" -  I don't really know anything about XML although have read the chapter in the prescribed textbook.
• Although I am reading this in an IKM context the "Remixing Content" idea is similar to the marketing concept of taking things to a new audience.  I think there is overlap here.
• The separation of structure and style point reiterates the embedding styles in documents exercise we did in tute 3.
• Note for John - This link is busted http://www.zeldman.com/2006/10/17/web-20-thinking-game/%20for%20more%20fun%20interpretations Did anyone else get it working?

Key summary points from the article (which again seem reasonable)

To summarize, these are what we see as the six main themes covering design in the Web 2.0 world:

1. Writing semantic markup (transition to XML)
2. Providing Web services (moving away from place)
3. Remixing content (about when and what, not who or why)
4. Emergent navigation and relevance (users are in control)
5. Adding metadata over time (communities building social information)
6. Shift to programming (separation of structure and style)

After a few moments, my investigationing turned to twitter.  I found that both Richard MacManus and Joshua Porter have twitter accounts.  Again, I decided to follow them.  For reference, if you are doing the Web2.0 adventure in order and haven't looked at twitter yet, here are links to their profiles.

Just watched The Machine is Us/ing Us (Final Version) by @mwesch

I've just watched the video, still not convinced of this whole web 2.0 caper, but my approach is to learn as much about it as I can.  My philosophy is to try and find a way to contribute where I can.  Hence, I left a comment on the video's youtube page.



I also read the description of the video....it's a cranked up version of the first one.  Did anyone find a copy of the first one?

I've also found out that Mike is on twitter.  I didn't know this before but just guessed that he would probably be replicated his "mwesch" user name on twitter.

Thoughts about What is Web 2.0 article by Tim O'Reilly

I want to say off the bat, that I come at this area as a bit of a skeptic about this web 2.0.  Whilst I am on facebook http://www.facebook.com/cameron.stewart and use twitter http://twitter.com/cameronstewart, to me these simply fall into a publishing category.

The fact that others use the same tool to do the same is good for the tool, but doesn't necessarily provide proof of Web 2.0 concept.

I am glad this course at least teaches us something about web 1.0 (by way of a foundation).  I would think that is is not to long before that distinction disappears between people that have never not known web 2.0 and those that witnessed the transition.

But perhaps I should keep on reading the article...

On the point about "If Netscape was the standard bearer for Web 1.0, Google is most certainly the standard bearer for Web 2.0" this article mentions nothing of Microsoft's role in the knocking off Netscape with Internet Explorer.

I like this point "At bottom, Google requires a competency that Netscape never needed: database management."  This might get me more interested in the ISYS2065 subject -> relational database design.  Who know's, I might even work for Google one day.

Glad the article mentioned Writely, the precurser to Google Docs (http://docs.google.com)

A Web 2.0 word processor would support wiki-style collaborative editing, not just standalone documents. But it would also support the rich formatting we've come to expect in PC-based word processors. Writely is a good example of such an application, although it hasn't yet gained wide traction.

Love this, since using these, never lost any work.  Does the backup for you, can have multi-authors easily.

The document concludes with these key attributes of Web 2.0

• Services, not packaged software, with cost-effective scalability
• Control over unique, hard-to-recreate data sources that get richer as more people use them
• Trusting users as co-developers
• Harnessing collective intelligence
• Leveraging the long tail through customer self-service
• Software above the level of a single device
• Lightweight user interfaces, development models, AND business models

Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Notes about Task "1a. Welcome to ISYS2356 Web 2.0 Adventure"

The article mentions" This is a very narrow definition" but provides no source.  I suspect it is from Wikipedia but can cut and paste previous sentence to find out into google.  The wikipedia article ranks first http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0  so I assume it is from there <<<<<<Cool huh, playing with different colours!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if smileys work here

This blog now showing up on search engines

Post to demonstrate that I know how to upload an image to blogger. 

If in the settings you selected the it's ok for Google to find my site via search engines, you can see if it shows up by typing site:yoursitename.blogspot.com into Google.  Here's my example site:web2-0adventure.blogspot.com

Introductory video about Web 2.0 Adventure and feedback on how other students are going so far

Introduction to second semester and talking about experiences of others in the ISYS2356 Web Adventure assignment. I was distracted for first 20 sec - didn't realise it was recording.  (Run time approx 6 minutes).

Some of the reasons that I can think of as to why the task may be difficult is:

• It's a new form of communication
• It's putting a bit of myself out there
• I don't really feel like I have anything important to say

What else is there?

Checking the things that I planning my Web 2.0 adventure last week are working

Until we hit the twitter section part of the tutorial in week 3, I have simply used www.twitterfeed.com to post content to my Web2Adventure Twitter account.  Twitter feed is simple to setup.

As you can see by the screen shot below, this is working.

Note:  The screenshot might not work as I have maxed out on my free google picasa web space.  You can visit this link to see the same content http://twitter.com/web2adventure (however as newer things are added this may not work so well.)

In addition, the google analytics (http://www.google.com/analytics/) account that I setup is also working.  Here are my stats in the first week.  The results are 6 visitors on the site so far, with an Avg. Time on site of 1 minute and 35 seconds.

In addition, the feedburner rss stats http://feedburner.google.com are also working.  Initial results are that I have 3 subscribers, probably John (our lectuer) and a couple of fellow students.  I wonder who?

Adding stats to blogger - Thanks @googleos

One of the goals of this assignment is to build on knowledge that you already have. If you have never blogged before, then this is low, however with that said, only about 2 out 20 people in the class didn't have a facebook account, so most are familiar with the concept of the added content to the internet.

I hadn't see this before, but I came across this blog post http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2010/07/blogger-stats.html about a new stats package for blogger. Judging by some of the comments, this is good news for blogger users.

This feature will speed up all blogs on blogger doe to less code of visitor trekking. I was using ststcounter code to track visitor nor it not necessary so i will remove it.

Looks interesting, but it will need to be more accurate. Right now Blogger Stats looks like it's inflating my incoming Internet Explorer visits and page views by a factor of 10.

Here is a link to how to set it up on your blog http://bloggerindraft.blogspot.com/2010/07/introducing-blogger-stats.html.  To make this work better, I am going to re-open the hide blog from search engines and remove from google recommended visitors to get more visitors to visit.

I will also have to look for an option to add the location automatically.

I have also gone for an safari kind of design, to keep with the "Web 2.0 adventure" theme.  I have replicated this as the background of the twitter account I have also setup for this which can be found www.twitter.com/web2adventure.  Initially, content to this account is just a repost of the rss feed, as we don't cover the twitter topic area until week3.  This is just a I might do some other stuff down the track with a facebook page.

ISYS2356 Web 2.0 Adventure is based on 21 Lunges, an online program developed by RMIT University Library to help staff learn about Web 2.0 technologies. It in turn was based on the "23 Things" in the Learning 2.0 Program developed by Helene Blowers, formerly Public Services Technology Director for thethe Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County (PLCMC) in North Carolina, USA.The Learning 2.0 program has been run in hundreds of libraries and other organisations throughout the world.
